Chris West, a recent graduate of Babson College, and Curtis Johnson are the brains behind Wall Street Connection (WSC), which was originally founded in New Orleans, LA in 2021.
The organization recently launched its Ambassador Program that will educate high school and college students about finance, investing and business, the WSC said.
The program works by using tailored professional mentorship, financial literacy classes, career exploration opportunities, and participation in an annual investment competition.
The best part: it's all for free!
“Wall Street Connection aims to make overlooked Black youth aware of career opportunities in financial services and advisory early in their life” Johnson said. “Without equipping youth with the proper knowledge and resources, the industry will continue to maintain underweight representation of Black Americans and widen the already large wealth gap.”
The program perfectly fits into WSC's overarching mission of helping to close a nationwide systemic racial wealth gap, the organization adds.
Ambassadors learn how financial services and advisory institutions can help build generational community wealth while also leading and positively influence their peers.
WSC has benefitted students like Jalayah Williams, who was the first winner of the nonprofit's annual stock competition and soon-to-be ambassador.
The high school freshman says the nonprofit helped her understand fundamental finance topics and set her up for her first successful investment.
"Wall Street Connection educated me a lot and helped me understand topics in finance,” Williams said. “It’s a great opportunity for my young peers to start early in life.”
WSC has also successfully coached their first cohort of students so they hope the Ambassador Program will continue breaking barriers for their students.
